Please remember to tell the staff if your contact details change. This may be particularly important in an emergency.
Please remember to be prompt for drop off and collection times as it is unsettling for the children. If you are unavoidably delayed in collecting your child at the end of a session, please telephone if possible to advise us. We are legally obligated to record in the register each time a child arrives after the session has started or is collected after the session is finished. Consistent late collection will be charged at the rate of £5.00 for every 5 minutes over the end of the session time. This may be waived for exceptional circumstances and where advance warning is given. If no contact has been made by the parent/carer and we have failed to contact other adults listed on your registration form we will follow our policy for non-collection of children.
PLEASE tell the supervisors on duty if a friend, relative or childminder is to collect your child after Pre-School. If a person unknown to Pre-School is to collect your child they will need to provide staff with the password you have stated on your registration form. The staff will not let your child leave Pre-School with an unauthorised adult.
Parents are asked to use the small gate in front of the main entrance of the school and not the double gates which are for vehicular access only. Once your children leave the Pre-School premises they are your sole responsibility. Pre-School insurance does not cover accidents happening in the school grounds or beyond. Please ensure the Pre-School gates are closed behind you.
The area surrounding the school is a resident’s parking zone although there are a number of visitor spaces on the Marston Road and at the bottom of William Street and John Garne Way. Please do not park or drop off/pick up on the double yellow or zig-zag lines in front of the school as this creates dangers for other children. Parents are not allowed to park on the school grounds.
Please remember that the use of mobile phones is not allowed inside the building.
Please bring in a snack to share. Your child could try something new with their friends such as fruit (fresh or dried), veggies (e.g. carrots, cucumber, celery), cheese, breadsticks or crackers, non-sugary cereal. Food must be in the original sealed packaging, or washable. If you would prefer your child to have their own fruit/vegetables you can provide separate, labelled fruit/vegetables per session. Children also have access to fresh drinking water throughout the sessions. If everyone brings something in at least once a week then our snack bowl will be topped up nicely.
Please remember that the Pre-School and St Michael’s have a ‘no nuts’ policy. Nuts, or food containing nuts, should not be brought into the building. Similarly, please do not bring kiwi fruits into Pre-School for snack or in lunchboxes. Kiwi fruits are grouped with those foods that trigger nut allergies.
Children who are eligible to stay for a full day must bring a packed lunch with them. We ask that you do not include any nuts or peanut butter in their sandwiches as some children have severe nut allergies. In addition, please do not put kiwi fruits in lunchboxes as they are grouped with those foods that trigger nut allergies and cut up all grapes and cherry tomatoes. Please supply cutlery if needed and packaging your child can open independently.
There is a small charge for your child to stay over lunchtime (currently £5.25) but you can use your nursery education funding to pay for this. Please see the Fees section of the website.
Children are allowed to bring one small toy from home each session, although they do not have to bring anything if you don’t wish them to. These items will be placed in the ‘Show and Tell’ box and your child will be encouraged to tell a member of staff about their toy during that session. Please do not bring anything of any sentimental and monetary value in case they get lost or broken.
Each child has a named drawer, sometimes shared, where they can keep their pictures and small models. The staff and committee also use the drawers to communicate with parents so please check and empty your child’s drawer regularly (drawers are in the children's cloakroom).
Please send your child to Pre-School in play clothes (not best). They will always have the opportunity to play with sand, glue, paint and water and although we take every precaution to try and protect clothes, accidents do happen. It is a good idea for your child to wear clothes that they can manage easily themselves – especially when rushing to the toilet! Please put a full change of named clothes (pants, socks, T-shirt, trousers/skirt) in a bag on your child’s peg. Some children do forget to use the toilet when they are busy! Please name all clothes that might be taken off.
The children have the opportunity to play outside throughout the year as stated in our Outdoor Policy. Please can you provide your child with a pair of named wellington boots to keep at Pre-School so they can continue to enjoy outside play in all weather conditions.
In warm weather please provide your child with a sun hat and apply sunscreen to protect him/her from sunburn. For those that stay all day, please provide a named bottle of sun cream so it can be reapplied for the afternoon session with supervision if needed.
Please do not send your child to Pre-School wearing any jewellery – this can get lost, broken and be dangerous if it catches while a child is playing. If your child needs to wear earrings then please make sure that these are studs.
We love helping the children to celebrate their birthdays in Pre-School. We have a special pretend cake with candles to blow out and we sing happy birthday to them. Some parents like to bring in treats for all of the children to enjoy but you do not need to do this if you don’t wish to. If you would like to bring in edible treats then please make sure they are shop bought, in the original box/wrapper with allergy advice and free from nuts so that the staff members on duty can check the ingredients. Treats don’t need to be cakes or biscuits. Some parents have recently brought in healthier options such as strawberry yoghurts or packets of raisins. Stickers, pens or pencils are another alternative.
Please let the supervisors know or state it on the registration form whether your child should have normal, non allergenic or no plasters in the case of accident.
We can administer prescribed named medicines such as inhalers but not antibiotics or pain relievers e.g. Calpol. Children who are unwell should not attend Pre-School (please see the Absence and Illness section below). At the start of the session the medicine should be given to a staff member. You will need to sign and date a permission form for us to administer the medicine. The medicine must come with clear instructions of dosage and the last time the medicine was administered to the child. At the end of the session the parent/carer will need to sign agreeing to the administering of the medicine.
Please let us know if your child is not able to attend Pre-School for whatever reason.
Children who are ill with sickness and/or diarrhoea should not return to Pre-School until 48 hours after the last bout of sickness or diarrhoea to prevent the illness spreading to other children and staff.
If your child is diagnosed with a ‘notifiable’ disease you MUST tell the Pre-School staff straight away. Current notifiable diseases are:
- Acute encephalitis
- Acute meningitis
- Acute poliomyelitis
- Acute infectious hepatitis
- Enteric fever (typhoid or paratyphoid fever)
- Food poisoning
- Haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS)
- Infectious bloody diarrhoea
- Invasive group A streptococcal disease/scarlet fever
- Legionnaires’ Disease
- Meningococcal septicaemia
- Viral haemorrhagic fever (VHF)
- Whooping cough
- Yellow fever
If your child is not yet toilet trained please ensure that you put two or three spare nappies and wipes in a bag on their peg. You may find it helpful to discuss the issue with your child’s key person. Please refer to Oxfordshire County Council’s personal care policy, a copy of which we have in Pre-School.
Please check your child’s head regularly. If your child does contract head lice please tell one of the supervisors so that a notice can be put up asking other parent’s to check their children. This information will of course be kept in the strictest confidence.
Pushchairs are not allowed in the building as this poses a risk in the event of fire/emergency evacuation. However, they can be left under the covered pathway outside Pre-School.
Children are welcome to come to Pre-School on their bikes and scooters and to leave them locked up in the school bike sheds. Please note that bikes and scooters must be pushed on the school grounds and not ridden.
Parents’ bikes should also be left in the bike sheds when dropping off and picking up. Please do not bring them within the pencil fence where when unattended they could fall down and hurt someone.
