This is a scarce small Iittala of Finland Varsanjalka (Colt’s foot) vase, model 3215, designed by Tapio Wirkkala, the design dating from 1950 but made throughout the next decade. The original was exhibited at the Triennale di Milano in 1951. The vase is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 70 years of use. The vase is blown in clear glass and is roughly in the shape of an inverted baluster with an asymmetric rim. The exterior of the vase has been incised with slightly wrythened vertical lines It measures 3.7 cm (1.5 inches) in width at its widest point. It ends in a base which is plain on which are etched the words “Tapio Wirkkala Iittala”. The vase is 11.5 cm (4.6 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There are a few marks to the upper rim where the engraver has carried through on some of the lines; a nice testimony to its hand-made nature. It weighs in at 75 g. (~ 3 oz.).
