Tapio Wirkkala for Iittala Kantarelli vase

Category:
This is a small Iittala Kantarelli vase, designed by Tapio Wirkkala and dating from the early 1950s. The shape was inspired by the chanterelle mushroom which grows wild in Finnish forests and the original vase won the 1951 Milan Triennial. An example can be seen in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The vase is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with use. The vase is broadly cylindrical in shape at the bottom spreading out towards the undulating rim, which measures 11.7 cm (4.6 inches) across at its widest point. The vase is blown in clear glass and is decorated with wheel-engraved vertical lines cut into the surface. The vase is 13 cm (5.2 inches) in height. There is a faint mark running across the upper surface. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. It is inscribed “Tapio Wirkkala Iittala” to the outside of the base rim. Lead glass. It weighs in at 190 g. (~ 7 oz.). Quote item: 9064 Please note: 1. All prices quoted are exclusive of postage.
